Kundalini Yoga and the funny immune system

From Patrick at KundaliniYogaBootCamp.com

This week I’ve been teaching sets that clear the lymphatic system and strengthen the immune system. One of the greatest things about Kundalini Yoga and yoga in general for that matter is that it acts very directly on the glandular system. Also known as the endocrine system. (hang on while I google endocrine) Yep, sure enough, endocrine just means a bunch of glands that secrete hormones. The glandular system of the body… more

Black Garbanzos For Energy

Healing Recipe

Black Garbanzos

Black Garbanzo Recipe

Yogi Bhajan: “Here in the west we are used to seeing the white garbanzos. But for nerve energy, there’s nothing like those little black garbanzos. The black garbanzos grow in fields in India. During the rainy season there’s so much lightening over these fields, that it looks like the fourth of July-electricity goes from the clouds to the ground and from the ground back up to the clouds! It’s a very funny natural phenomenon to see. Normally people avoid these fields at this time, because they don’t want to be electrocuted. These black garbanzos are very good for the nervous system, and help to control the electromagnetic field of the body. They are the most powerfully energizing food in the world. They are very good for health.
Wash the beans and soak them overnight. In the morning, drain them, and put them into a pressure cooker, and cook until soft. Then make a soup out of them. Or, you can use the following recipe: ”

Wash, drain, and soak 3 cups black garbanzo beans overnight. Cook at a slow boil in fresh water, for about 3 hours. Once soft, drain off most of the liquid, and return to the pot with about 1 cup of the cooking water.

In a large, thick-bottomed frying pan, heat on a medium fire:
1 1/2 Cup Mustard Oil
1 1/2 Cup sliced Ginger
2 sliced Onions
5-8 cloves chopped Garlic
3 chopped Jalapenos (optional).

Cook until soft. Then add:
2 pre-boiled Potatoes (cut into pieces)
1 tsp. Black Pepper
1-2 tsp. Black Salt

Cook for a few minutes. Then add the onion, ginger, garlic mixture to the beans in the original cooking pot. Cook over a low flame, stirring the ingredients for about 10 minutes. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves, chopped. (Note: extra black salt can be added to taste.)

Mung Beans & Rice Recipe (Kitcheree)

This ancient recipe is very healing and amazingly delicious.  We serve it often after special workshop classes and events.  The spices are very healing to the body and the combination of mung beans, rice and vegetables create a stew which is considered “predigested” meaning it is easily assimiilated into the body making it especially good for cleansing.————————————

Mung Beans & Rice Cleansing Diet.

  • Eat only mung beans and rice for 30 days as a mono-diet. Cook with lots of vegetables. Yogi Bhajan says,” You Americans are rich. You should but lots of vegetables in your mung beans and rice.”A good cleansing diet that gives plenty of nourishment.
  • Good for the kidneys, colon, and digestive organs, or when food is not being digested thoroughly by the intestines.
  • Good diet for winter (make it spicy)
  • May have fruit in between meals for snack. Also may take yogi tea. Continue reading Mung Beans & Rice Recipe (Kitcheree)

Life is A Wave of Challenges

The basic difference between an ordinary man and a warrior is that a warrior takes everything as a challenge, while an ordinary man takes everything as a blessing or as a curse.  — Carlos Castaneda, The Teachings of Don Juan

If you take everything in your life neutrally, as a challenge, then you’ll be able to keep up with everything that comes to you, good or bad.  It’s very easy to think that things are against you or that you’re having bad luck.  If you give in to that thought then you’re defeated. There’s so much of us that is seemingly out of our control or invisible to us that when things happen to us in a negative light, it’s very easy to blame it on misfortune.

I couldn’t find the exact quote, but recently I read a Yogi Bhajan lecture where he was saying that, life is a wave, sometimes up and sometimes down.  Night always follows day and there’s always going to be a challenging time that follows good fortune. The mind somehow tricks us into thinking that one day we’re going to cross some finish line and everything’s going to be okay.  The truth is, there is no finish line until you take your last breath.

Life is a lot like surfing.  Sometimes you catch the perfect wave and sometimes you wipe out.  If you wipe out and just take your board and go home, you’ll never catch that next great wave and have the experience of riding it.  The idea is to get back on the board and paddle back out.  Each day you surf a little and your arms get stronger, your skills get better and your intuition tells you which wave is the right one.  In this way, you’ve prepared yourself to enjoy the good waves with all your energy. After some practice you end up catching more waves than you miss and then you start looking for different places to find bigger, more challenging waves.

This is why we do yoga and meditate.  We’re after the neutral mind of a warrior who accepts all as a challenge, good or bad. This takes some strength of mind because thoughts are magnetic and it’s easy to get pulled into emotion and reaction.

It’s a lot like that great Taoist parable about the Old Farmer:

A very old farmer lived in a country village. He owned a horse which he used for plowing and sometimes to ride into town. One day his horse ran away. All his neighbors came by to say how terrible this was, but the farmer simply said, “Maybe.”

A few days later the horse returned to the farmer and along with the horse, followed a few wild horses. The neighbors all came by to congratulate the farmer on his good fortune, but the farmer just said, “Maybe.”

The next day the farmer’s son tried to ride one of the wild horses. The horse threw him and the son broke his leg. The neighbors all came by to offer their sympathies marveling at the farmer’s unexpected bad luck, but again, the farmer said “Maybe.”

The a few days passed and conscription officers came to the village to take young men in for the army. They rejected the farmer’s son because of his broken leg, he wasn’t useful to them. The neighbors told him how lucky he was, and once again the farmer replied “Maybe.”

Neutrality takes strength of practice.

Friday Night Light – Clearing The Pathways of Perception (A Three Part Workshop)

There is great change going on in the collective psyche as we enter the Aquarian age. We can see this change all around us. Every system in the world is experiencing great ups and downs as instantaneous nature of information compresses and seemingly speeds up time, creating the illusion that there is “no time” to get everything done. This pressure causes stress and compounds the negative effects of your old habits. The ancients predicted these times and they also left us technology to deal with it.

This series of workshops will clear the pathways of thought-manifestation by loosening and moving out the thought forms that short circuit and block your natural flow. The times that are upon us require fast clearing of the things that do not serve us, making us lighter and more flexible so that we can maintain our neutral mind, which is the balanced state of mind out of which comes your best self. It is possible to stay in that flow all the time, with practice.

This series of three Friday night workshops will cover one complete lunar cycle.  The full moon is when your energy is at it’s highest point in the cycle.  By setting an intention and then clearing old patterns and habits on the full moon, you are able to ride that energy and accelerate that intention through the next full moon allowing yourself a foundation for future change.

Participants will be given the meditation from the first session so that they can continue to practice at home (preferably, daily) over the cycle until we finish the series.

You are welcome to one or all of the workshops.

Cost (Includes Dinner): $25 individual workshop or $60 for all three (if registered by November 13th)
